City of Alexandria Information
Alexandria, an independent city located in Northern Virginia just outside of Washington, D.C., along the banks of the Potomac River, is populated with government contractors, military personnel, lawyers, and other professionals. Alexandria is home to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) as well as the local division of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia (the fast-moving "Rocket Docket"), Northern Virginia's federal court. Several non-profit organizations have their headquarters in Alexandria, such as United Way and the Salvation Army.
Alexandria's historic downtown area is known as Old Town. Old Town is packed with high-end shopping boutiques, fine restaurants, nightclubs, and various tourist attractions. Alexandria is the richest city in Virginia, with over 40 percent of its homes and condominiums assessed at over $550,000. Some of Alexandria's residents receive free wireless Internet access under a government initiative that is one of the first of its kind.
