John B. Flood
Of CounselJohn B. Flood is Of Counsel with BerlikLaw LLC. He represents clients in trials and other adversarial proceedings, in matters involving business disputes, non-competition and other forms of restrictive covenants, and clients in all aspects of labor and employment law.
John previously served as an active-duty Air Force Judge Advocate (JAG) officer, attaining the rank of Major. John then joined a national labor and employment firm, becoming a Shareholder and gaining expertise in all areas of labor and employment law. John’s approach to the practice of law reflects the values of excellence, teamwork, and service to others that he fostered in the Air Force and now applies to each client in every case.
LitigationJohn is a trial attorney. He loves being in the courtroom. He has represented clients in more than 60 jury and bench trials and has handled countless other arbitrations and hearings. His practice now focuses on helping clients in civil and employment litigation, representing clients in non-competition matters, and advising clients on day-to-day labor and employment issues.
John’s litigation skills have been nationally recognized by Super Lawyers (Employment Litigation, 2013 – present) and by The Best Lawyers in America (Litigation – Labor and Employment, 2018 – present). He enjoys helping other lawyers develop their trial and courtroom skills by serving as an adjunct faculty member for the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA).
John also runs his own firm, Flood Marcavage Law LLC, a Maryland-based litigation firm which services clients on labor and employment law matters, business disputes, and various types of litigation.
Advice and CounselJohn has extensive experience counseling clients on day-to-day labor and employment issues, such as terminations, requests for accommodations and leaves of absence, reductions in force, and wage and hour matters. While in the Air Force, John acted as de facto in-house employment counsel by advising and representing Air Force management in all aspects of labor and employment law in relation to its civilian workforce. John believes that good, proactive legal advice will usually avoid costly litigation, which is always in the best interests of clients.
Education, Bar Admission, and CommunityJohn has a B.S. from the Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts, a J.D. from the Oklahoma City University School of Law, and a LL.M. from the Georgetown Law Center. John is admitted to practice in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Oklahoma, and various federal district and appellate courts.
John has a passion for public service and baseball, and he combined these interests to found U.S. – Japan Baseball, a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to foster cross cultural relationships among young people through a youth baseball exchange program. John lives in Rockville with his wife and son, who also has a love of baseball.
